5 Steps To A Digital Detox

When you’re scrolling through your social media do you feel uplifted, confident, inspired? Or do you feel depressed and unmotivated, comparing your life/body/career to others? If you don’t have a positive relationship with your social media and it’s affecting your wellbeing, it may be time for a digital detox. A digital detox can help you improve your confidence, reduce stress and help you to connect with who you really are and what you value in life.

Modern social media and our self-esteem

What we view on social media can affect our confidence, body image and judgement of ourselves and others. The 2020 Netflix documentary The Social Dilemma explores the damaging effects of social media such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. The documentary highlights the massive increase of self-harm, suicide and depression in young people, particularly since these sites became available on our mobile phones around 10 years ago.

Social media can be highly addictive and users can become fixated on likes, followers and what other people are doing/buying/eating/posting. It can impact our confidence and makes us less likely to find our true voice and identity because we are focused on other people’s lives. The unrealistic images of bodies, homes, cars and happy lives are often heavily edited and fake, yet we are still tricked into thinking it's all real. This sets an impossible standard to compare ourselves to.

How can I tell if my social media is good for me?

Step 1: Log onto your favourite social media platform
Scroll through your feed and as you view posts, images and videos ask yourself the following;

  • Does this make me feel good about myself and who I am? Or do I feel negative and judgemental about my body, clothes, job, family, finances?
  • Does this make me feel light, uplifted and inspired? Or, do I feel sad, lonely and self-critical?

These questions will help guide you to what is working and what is not.

Step 2: Unfollow

Take the leap and unfollow or unlike any of the accounts that do the following;

  • They trigger you to feel bad about yourself (your body, clothes, car, job, finances, family)
  • They don’t bring you closer to loving and accepting yourself for who you are now
  • They are not in alignment with the kind of person you are or healthy balanced lifestyle you want to create

Congratulations! You are now clear of some triggers and obstacles that may be affecting your mental, emotional and physical wellbeing.

Step 3: Remove judgment

So how can you avoid falling back into following accounts and consuming content that is not good for you? How can we stop judging our friends/family or worrying what they will think?

Removing judgement is one way we can do this. Next time you feel jealous or judgemental do this instead;

  1. Mentally wish the person well and be happy for their success and achievements
  2. Tell yourself that you too can be the best version of yourself
  3. Move on without any feelings of jealousy, resentment or judgement

How else can we remove judgement of ourselves and others? Compliment yourself, compliment others, accept compliments. Don’t criticise or judge others, whether it’s how they look, parent, work, spend etc. When we stop the judgement and shaming it frees us up to improve our own wellbeing and connect more deeply with our own path and purpose.

Step 4: Follow

When you are deciding who to follow and what you want to come up in the feed, ask yourself the following;

  • Who has the energy, confidence, message and values that you align yourself with, or want to be more like?

Some suggestions are listed below.

Natural beauty and artistic expression

Social media can be a great place to explore and express your own beauty, self-expression, creativity and connection to a community. There is a lot of amazing content and accounts that can help feel great about ourselves and enhance our own identity and values, rather than diminish them.

Positive accounts to follow

Choose accounts that resonate with you and make you feel good. Focus on what you want in life and your core values (adventure, health, creativity, family, learning, spirituality, security), not what you don’t have.

Here are some suggestions, you don’t have to like all of them or think it's the right way. That is the value of social media, there is something for everyone. Use this as a guide to start thinking and cultivating your own virtual support network and community.

Last week, in celebration of our New Nude collection, we hosted a 'nude' art class with @_artbycharlie. Charlie led the class, discussing abstract figurative techniques and started with a drawing exercise, focusing on the lines of the body, shapes, movement, negative and positive space, placing and composition. Our models were in the nude - Boody nudes. They each showcased the new colours and were the drawing focus of the class. Depending on your skin tone, everyone's version of nude is different. We believe that every line, fold, curve, shape, and colour that makes you you is something to celebrate. Our class was inspired by nude being a state of being, not a colour.  Discover our collaboration below with images of the day.  Shop nudes.

Turn Your Inner Critic Into Your Inner Guide

Lifestyle

Turn Your Inner Critic Into Your Inner Guide

It’s that voice that says… “No, you can’t do that” “You’re not as good as him/her” “You can’t succeed in achieving your dream” This is the voice of your inner critic. By better understanding the inner critic we can turn this little voice and critical narration in your mind into a positive force, helping us clear the obstacles we face so we can achieve our goals and create the life of our dreams. Why we have an inner critic The inner critic is part of our comfort zone. An ancient survival system, consisting of instinct, intuition and fear. That little voice that wants to warn you or remind you not to change is designed to keep us alive and safe. In our modern lives, the inner critic and comfort zone has become too restrictive and unsupportive of our dreams and goals. By always staying inside your comfort zone you may be blocking yourself from truly believing in yourself and thus never really reaching your potential in life. When we are tucked away safely in our comfort zone, we can see challenges as something to avoid, rather than a chance to learn and grow. We can get caught up thinking about the effort something will take rather than seeing it as worth the work to get where you want to be. Always being inside our comfort zone can feel like you don’t have control, as if you are trapped. Stepping outside of the comfort zone By deciding to step outside of your comfort zone, you invite in more possibilities, opportunities and fulfillment than you could ever dream of. You choose to be inspired by others success and achievements instead of intimidated, jealous and judgemental. You start to use their success, hard work and happiness as motivation to achieve your own! Those people who seem to have it all together, have all the luck or don’t have the same obstacles as you are actually the ones who have fought to step outside of their comfort zone. They continually challenge that inner critic that wants to keep them playing small and safe. And because they step outside their comfort zone and make friends with their inner critic, they are more in control and free. You too can learn to turn your inner critic into your guide and friend. Using your inner critic as a guide What we are most scared to do and is our biggest challenge is sometimes the exact thing we should be doing; Leaving the comfort of your job to start your own business Joining a gym and seeing a nutritionist to get healthier Studying that course you’ve been dreaming about for years Following your passions and hobbies like singing, writing, dancing or art By following the fear we can find our true path and happiness. Listen to that critical voice and challenge what you’ve been telling yourself. Turn “I can’t” into “I’m going to try”. Making friends with the inner critic, turning it into your best friend! Don’t avoid the challenges. They are life’s biggest lessons. Don’t be afraid to fail, use it as a way to learn and improve. No successful or happy person ever gets it right every time, through trial and error and embracing the challenges they became stronger and wiser, improving on their goals and skills, learning how to do better next time. When that voice comes up again, simply say “thank you for your concern and trying to keep me safe, but I want to step out of my comfort zone and grow”. Let the voice know that you are going to try and you would like its support and encouragement. Direct that voice to help support you grow and learn, and before you know it you’ll be smashing your goals and aiming even higher. With that little voice now saying to yourself; “Well done, you deserve it” “Good for them, they have worked hard to achieve their goals” “I am trying my best and I believe in myself” “Life’s challenges and obstacles help me become a better person” “I choose to follow my dreams and step outside of my comfort zone” “I embrace change and developing myself” Guest Author: Fiona Lucas

Activities To Do If Staying Home This Christmas

Christmas this year may look and feel different. With many staying home for Christmas and the holiday break this year, there’s never been a better time to read that book you’ve been meaning to read, declutter your space and embrace sustainable living like building a compost bin. We’ve put a list together of activities that can be enjoyed for those staying home this Christmas. Show us what you’re up to and tag us on social @boody - we'd love to see! Build a compost bin. Composting is a great way to enrich soil to help your plants grow. Instead of throwing away your organic waste, you can compost and see over the course of a year, the material you have compiled will decompose. See our list to help get you started Fruit scraps Vegetable scraps Coffee grounds Eggshells Grass and plant clippings Dry leaves Finely chopped wood and bark chips Shredded newspaper Straw Embrace nature around you. There is no better way to reset than to get back and connect nature and all her goodness. Why not go for a bike ride or hike around your local national park. Take in that fresh air and focus on your breath. Spending time in nature has many benefits for your mental wellbeing and can improve your mood and reduce stress. Clean Out Your Closet and Donate to a Charity Declutter and clean out your space. A good rule of thumb is to donate anything that hasn't made its way into rotation in the past year. We support Thread Together. Thread Together serves a simple yet important mission: to deliver good quality, clean clothing to members of our community who are doing it tough. Learn more about Thread Together here. Plant a Tree or bring plants into your home Planting trees is a way we can give back to the planet and to ourselves. Through the process of photosynthesis, trees absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. Why not opt for a tree you can eat and plant a citrus tree like oranges or lemons. Grow your own vegetable garden We’re real enthusiasts when it comes to having your own vegetable garden including a herb garden. Consuming more fresh fruits and vegetables is one of the most important things you can do to stay healthy. When you pick vegetables right from your garden, the vitamin content will be at its highest. Growing your own vegetables, fruits and herbs means that you are reducing the risk of eating vegetables that contain harmful chemicals because you know exactly what you're eating. Get creative and paint Painting produces a relaxing, open environment. Explore your own creativity! Stimulus of the creative mind allows one to positively isolate from reality. This allows you to mentally rest which in turn lowers stress and generates relaxation and happy feelings. Learn a dance routine Get up and get moving. It’s so fun and really allows you to take your mind off your thoughts and into concentrating on dance steps. Start a book club Running a book club is not only a fun way to enjoy books and meet new people, it's also a great way to learn new perspectives and participate in some healthy debate!
